Auto World is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Plymouth Road Runner by replicating an extremely rare 1970 Plymouth Superbird. Only seven V-Code 440 Six Pack versions were painted Petty Blue.
The nose cone and rear wing were specifically developed for NASCAR using windtunnel technology. Adding nineteen inches to the overall length, the elongated fiberglass nose allowed the car to slice through the air at higher speeds and the enormous rear wing allowed for perpetual downforce applied to the rear axle during racing.
For 1970, NASCAR standards dictated that the same vehicle must be available to the general public with the minimum production number being one per every two dealerships in the US. So, Plymouth built a total of 1,935 units of the Plymouth Superbird. Of those, only about 1,000 survive today. 1970 was the only year for the Plymouth Superbird.
